Characteristics of this Rare Breed

Cotons are generally very easy going with a calm temperament, they may alert you by barking to a knock at the door but they are easily settled and do not continue barking as other small dogs tend to do. Cotons are not yappy or high strung. They are very adaptable, love to travel and handle it with ease. Cotons have been described as a big dog in a small package.

Cotons are joyous, loving and deeply devoted to their family members. They love nothing more than to be where you are whether playing, cuddling or curled up next to your feet. Cotons are an intelligent breed with a true desire to please their owner.

The Coton de Tulear can usually be described in three different colorations: white, which often has pale tan patches on the ears and on the back, tri-color being black, brown and white as a puppy, but fading to cream and white with a touch of black in adulthood, and black and white which usually remains true until advancing age causes the black to fade to grey or silver.

Our puppies grow up here in our home and as a part of our everyday lives because our Cotons are part of our family. The puppies grow up under foot, experiencing the sights, sounds and comings and goings of people appropriately and safely. They are held, cuddled and very much loved. For these most essential and critical weeks of growth and maturity, they are the center of our attention as they should be. This all makes for a well adjusted puppy that will handle the transition from our home to yours exceptionally well.

Beware of the many puppy mills and back yard breeders in ever increasing numbers with puppies for sale. These dogs are bred with little regard for their health, genetic history and/or physical and emotional stability. An uneducated buyer purchasing a cute, fluffy puppy may later learn the sad implications of poor quality breeding.

Cotons require much less maintenance than other long coated dogs, the coat needs to be brushed out and groomed about 3 times a week. Adult Cotons weigh about 14 lbs. and are about 12 inches tall.
